Category 1: Four-year College or University Scholarships

Up to six scholarships are available in this category. Students applying for this level of the available scholarships will be ranked based on the application packet, including the required essay based on the common reader.
  • One National English Honor Society Scholarship (NEHS) for $3,000
    This scholarship is given in honor of Dr. William C. Johnson, Executive Director of Sigma Tau Delta in recognition of his dedication to the founding of NEHS.
  • One National English Honor Society (NEHS) Council Scholarship for $2,000This scholarship is awarded by the NEHS Advisory Council to the student presenting the second place essay.
  • Four Sigma Tau Delta Scholarships, each in the amount of $1,500
    These scholarships are funded by Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society for four-year colleges and univeristies, which is the sponsoring organization for NEHS.

Category 2: Two-year Community College Scholarship

This category provides one $500 scholarship to a graduating senior who plans to attend a community college and is provided by Sigma Kappa Delta (SKD), the two-year college English honor society.

Application Process for All Scholarships

The application with two documents attached: an application essay based on one of the common reader prompts and a background document, must be submitted online to NEHS between December 1, 2010 and February 1, 2011.
Please follow these steps:
  1. Write your essay. Essay Prompts will be posted November 1, 2010.
  2. Prepare attachments (application essay and background document).
  3. Submit online application with attachments. Online submissions are open between December 1, 2010 and February 1, 2011. Unlike in past years, all scholarship essay submissions must be delivered via this online system. No essays will be accepted sent via US Postal Mail.
Scholarship winners will be announced no later than May 1, 2011, and the scholarship amounts will be mailed after recipients provide proof of acceptance as students at the institution of higher learning they will attend.
